CIS Railway Safety Commission members visit Operail
On 3 April, members of the safety commission of the CIS Council for Railway Transport paid a visit to their Estonian colleagues and discovered Operail’s Muuga depot.
The 35-member delegation visited the Muuga depot to meet Operail’s modernised C30-M locomotive, Karl*, and to learn more about the locomotive’s construction history. In addition to the locomotive, the safety commission members were able to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of Tallinn’s Old Town with the help of virtual reality headsets.
“We were very pleased to host the CIS safety commission members, share our knowledge about locomotive construction as well as our experience on how to ensure safe movement on the railway,” said Chairman of the Operail Board, Raul Toomsalu. “These meetings with colleagues from other countries, where examples of best practices are shared, are always useful for all parties,” added Toomsalu.
* Operail honours the tradition of giving names to locomotives manufactured in Estonia. Locomotives built at Operail’s Tapa depot are christened with the first names of Tapa station managers. The name Karl comes from the Tapa station manager Karl Glaudan, who took over the management of the Tapa station under the German occupation in the summer of 1918 and remained in that position until 1933.
