We are an Estonian railway company whose main business activities are freight transport, rolling stock maintenance and repair, and locomotive construction. We service the Estonian import, export, and domestic trade, as well as transit trade through Estonia. We maintain and repair our own rolling stock and build locomotives for our own use, but we also offer these services to our customers.
Operail is wholly owned by the Estonian state. The management board, which is appointed by the supervisory board, is responsible for the executive management of the company. We employ about 200 people across Estonia. Our people work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ensure that goods are transported safely.
The history of Operail is closely interlinked with the history of the Estonian railway. The beginning of rail transport in Estonia can be traced to an event that took place on 24 October 1870, with the opening of the first rail connection in Estonia, the Paldiski–Tallinn–Narva–Gatchina line. On 15 November 1918, the Northwest Railway (Looderaudtee), the First Approach Track Association (Esimese Juurdeveoteede Selts), and the field railway sections of the army and maritime fortress provided the basis for the formation of an independent company, Republic of Estonia Railway (Eesti Vabariigi Raudtee), which also offered freight services.
